Volunteer—Community Impact

We know of no other community that has a service program quite like the Saint Louis Peregrine Society. Serving over 3,000 clients annually, the Peregrine Society fills in gaps that exist in most heath insurance programs–and do it at no cost to the client.

For instance, transportation for radiation cans chemotherapy treatments are offered via a local cab company with the Peregrine Society picking up the tab. Last year over 4,000 trips were provided.

Nutritional supplements like Ensure or Boost are often required for cancer patients but not covered by insurance.
In 2007, the Peregrine Society distinguished over 275,000 cans of supplement which would cost the patient around
$1 per can retail.

Relieving the patient and their families of costs like those described above allows them to cover necessities such as utility, rent and food.

Children’s Programs

Peregrine Society annual Branson Trip Children's Peregrine Program Children's Program

Since 1990 the Peregrine Society has organized and sponsored a trip to Branson, Missouri for children with cancer. Children from St. Louis Children's Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Hospital for Children enjoy a fun-filled three day weekend with their parents and siblings.

About 100 people leave St. Louis on a Sunday morning in May and return Monday evening. In between, they experience Silver Dollar City and marvel at talented performers at venues like the Dixie Stampede, Presley Country Jubilee and Jim Stafford Show.

One purpose of this event is to give the families the opportunity to enjoy themselves leaving their troubles at home and do so at no cost to themselves. All costs for transportation, food, lodging and entertainment are covered by the Peregrine Society.

An equally important benefit of the weekend trip is the opportunity for families to bond with others who are undergoing a similar experience and challenge.

Holiday Program

Holiday Program Holiday Program Holiday Program

The Peregrine holiday program provides holiday gifts for about 130 of our patients and their families each year.

Included in the packages sent to each family is a personal gift for the patient, gifts for each child, personal care items, laprobes and bedsox made by our volunteers and a gift certificate to a local supermarket.

The packages are prepared by our volunteers and then delivered by volunteers of Troop C of the State Highway Department.

The total cost of the program is about $8,500.00.
